Yogi of the Week

Laura Martinez is an awesome awesome yogini. She has been supporting YIP from the very beginning both as student and Yoga teacher.  As an uptown girl (but a Texan at heart), Laura cares greatly for our community and her efforts to create a positive impact extend beyond the Manhattan borders and unto the Bronx where she volunteers as a Yoga Teacher for Mothers on the Move, a program that provides health and nutrition education to low-income mothers.  I didn't get a chance to ask Laura all of the usual Yogi of the Week questions, but I can tell you this much (and I think she would agree), that at the moment she likes all poses that feel good after a long run because Laura is training to run the New York City Marathon this year!!
So if you see Laura biking, running, or doing Yoga next to you at the next YIP day, give her a wave, a thumbs up, and (if its well intentioned) a shoulder massage :-)

Thank you for the sweet write up!!! I was so suprised to see myself featured since I haven't taught a class for YIP this year. I hope to soon. I am so happy to be a part of this amazing program! I've always tried to volunteer in my community in different ways. I had no intention to actually teach when I did my teacher training...simply just wanted to grow my personal practice. Then Mothers On the Move reached out to me, and I felt I found a way that I can contribute in a really meaningful way. Offering a free class to women (who might not be able to participate in a yoga class for many different reasons) is something that I am proud and blessed that I am able to do. I am just as excited to offer the same in Washington Heights...my own neighborhood of five years! Thanks for all your hard work and effort. I think the impact will be more than any of us imagine!

    Peace and Love,

    Laura

    P.S. Bring on the massage(s)!!! :)

  2. Maybe Mothers on the Move can come to YIP one day as a day trip and we can arrange a Museum visit too! What do you think?

As for the impact, yeah - its pretty amazing! and I think it is really thanks to everybody's effort to come every weekend. What I like most is that I don't feel anything is forced, I think our coming together is pretty natural and so it's a lot of fun.

I can't wait for you to teach us next!!! I feel there is so much we can learn from you and the example you have set as a yogini.

Luv ya and will miss you while you are away jetsetting!
